On 27 June, 20 Members of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe tabled a Written Declaration “The new Abortion Law of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia violates international standards†where they expressed grave concern about this recent legislative development. They criticized the urgency of the procedure as well as failure of the law to correspond to any international or European standards.
Finally Members urged Macedonian authorities to “ensure that international standards based on sound science, medicine and human rights serve as primary guidance in this area of legislation”.
